facilities

What we have to Offer
Augie computer science majors have a vast array of facilities available to their use. Ranging from a completely wired campus to a number of fully functional computer labs.

Network
The Augustana network is comprised of two 10 MB connection going to each student room on campus which is supported by a gigabit fiber backbone to the campus servers. The campus also currently has wireless access to the library, the huddle and lower commons area, and in development currently is the addition of wireless access in the lobbies of each academic building as well as in the lobbies of each of the dorms.

Computer Labs
Even though as a computer science major more than likely you will have your own computer, it is important to be able to have computer labs for the occasions when you can't be at your room or don't have your laptop with you. In the Gilbert Science Center, there are two labs, one comprised of approximately 20 Pentium 4 machines with 17” flat panel monitors, the other containing a mix of Pentium 4 and MAC OS X machines. In Madsen, there are two labs of Pentium 4 machines with over 25 machines in each lab. The Humanities center has a 12 machine Pentium 4 lab and the Library has a small lab on the main floor and 24 laptops with wireless that students may checkout for use in the building. Each dorm also has a small computer lab available for you (5-12 machines/lab).

Services Provided
The Augustana Information Technology department provides technical support should you need it, as well as a 15 MB email account and a 15 MB network storage account accessible via Novel and FTP. The IT department also provides web hosting to all students via the network storage account. Laptops are available for checkout from the IT department. Any questions, contact the Help Desk at 5331 or visit their website.

Specifically for Computer Science Majors
The services above are all provided via the IT department. Computer Science majors have an account on a Linux (Slackware 10.1) server. The Linux server has 2 GB of backed up storage available for each major. The Linux server will also provide web hosting for each major (within their 2 GB). The web hosting will have other services such as Perl and PHP (and others) available for majors (these are services the IS department does not provide on their web server). Also available to Computer Science majors is a large computer hardware lab with additional workstations, Logicworks© circuit design program and a great deal of hardware for majors to "play" with.

The Computer Science department provides a computer lab for computer science majors. The lab contains 11 machines: 4 Windows XP (each with dual 19" or 21" monitors), 4 Windows 2000 (each with dual processors), and 3 Solaris 9 (each with dual 64-bit processors). All of the computer science areas are served by wireless access points (provided by the CS department and the IS department) for student use.
