How to: Connect to your room computer from the lab or Library (Remote Desktop)

This capability is only available if you are running Windows XP professional. XP Home does not contain this feature.

In order to connect to your room computer from another computer, you must first enable it on your room computer.

Right click on "My Computer" and select properties. "My Computer" may be located on your desktop or in your Start menu.

When the properties window comes up, click on the "Remote" tab. The properties window should looke like this:

Select the check box "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer." Note: the user on your computer that you are going to log in as must have a password.

Now your room computer is ready to accept remote connections from other computers. Note: Checking this box should automatically configure your Windows Firewall to allow incoming RDP connections.

The next thing you must do is run the Remote Desktop Connection program on the client computer. If the computer is a Windows XP Professional computer (all of the lab machines are) then all you have to do is go to "Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications > Remote Desktop Connection"

The program should look like this:

If the computer is not a Windows XP Professional machine you can download the program from here.

On Augie's network you will need to know the IP of your room machine. To find this, click on "Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt" When the black box comes up type in "ipconfig" and press "Enter"

This will display your IP information. The number you will need to remember is the IP address. It should start with 10. Enter that number in the "Computer" text box in the Remote Desktop Connection program and press "Connect"

This should bring up a login box where you can type in your username and password. Have fun!
